Carnarvon Fishing Community Show Passion For Their Fishery

CarnarvonMeeting11032016
Recfishwest recently attended a community meeting in Carnarvon where 400 community members turned out to voice their concerns on the proposed introduction of fish traps in local waters.

Since the proposal was tabled by the Department of Fisheries in late January, Recfishwest have been working with the Carnarvon recreational fishing community to ensure that their views on the issue are well understood and well represented to decision makers. The care, stewardship and passion displayed by local fishers towards their fisheries was outstanding and should be commended.

Recfishwest have received over 250 submissions on the issue, demonstrating a high level of community interest and concern. We wish to thank all those who took the time to contribute their views on this issue.

Local fishers and businesses are concerned that the introduction of fish traps will impact on tourism and recreational fishing experiences, particularly around species such as red emperor, coral trout and other highly sought after bottom fish.

Now that the submission period has closed, Recfishwest will be providing a consolidated position to the State Government early next week, on behalf of the recreational fishing community.
