Where to Catch With Kids

Western Australia has some fantastic fishing spots that are perfect for fishing with children.

We have listed a few of those locations here and over the coming weeks, we will be adding more to the list, as well as further information to help you plan your trip.

Hillary’s Boat Harbour

The fishing jetty is a popular spot to catch bream, skippy, herring, whiting and even crabs. Best time is early evening or early morning.

Fremantle

In Fremantle Harbour, the kids will have fun trying their luck for bream, herring, tailor and skippy but larger fish such as mulloway, flathead, garfish, whiting and mackerel are sometimes caught too. Fremantle Wharf behind the E Shed markets is also worth trying. Common catches here are tailor, whiting and the odd mackerel. Using burley will increase your chances of a catch. Check out our burley recipe on our How To Catch Australian Herring Guide..

Riverside Gardens, Bayswater

Great little spot for kids to go fishing. Fish from the little jetty or the beach for bream or mulloway. There is a fully fenced playground if the kids get bored and a vintage caravan in the carpark that serves coffee, drinks, ice creams and snacks.

Pelican Point Jetty, Matilda Bay

Located near the sea scouts, Pelican Point Jetty is a nice, quiet spot that also has a small beach and grassed area. Bream are the most commonly caught species here.

Point Walter

Another well equipped spot to fish with kids. Mulloway, flathead and bream can be caught from the beach or the sand bar. There’s also a playground, rest rooms and a café.

Woodman Point, Munster

Just south of Coogee Beach, Woodman Point has a great jetty where you can catch such species as herring, snapper and tailor to name a few. Head to the bait shop first and pick up a bag of little crabs for best results. The water is nice and shallow and there is a playground and barbecues as well.

Moore River, Guilderton

Moore River is a great place for a family fishing day trip or short getaway. Fish the river for bream or the beach for tailor, whiting and herring, as well as the odd mulloway.

Mandurah

Mandurah is a fantastic location to take the kids fishing. Only about an hour’s drive from Perth, it has something for everyone. The Jolly Frog Jetty in the Dawesville Cut is a great spot to catch sand whiting, King George whiting, yellowfin whiting, herring, tailor, silver bream, skippy, and salmon during season. Try your luck at prawning or crabbing in the Peel Inlet or head out to the beaches for some tailor, sand whiting or herring. You might even catch a salmon if you’re fishing in Autumn.
