There has been some good fishing out wide when the weather permits, with the best results for those who head for the Continental Shelf. There has been a mix of red and queen snapper, hapuka and grey-banded cod. On the coral in around 65m, there are breaksea cod and samson fish, along with queen and pink snapper. Shallower ground has been producing the odd stray pink snapper, large skippy, breaksea cod and samson fish.

The rivers are offering plenty of little bream, with the better fish over 40cm mainly falling to bait anglers. The have been some small mulloway and tailor in the Kalgan. Herring are coming on strong along the beaches, especially east of town, with some big fish caught. The Sand Patch and West Cape Howe are worth a try.

Juvenile salmon are turning up and a big school of adult fish was spotted at Bluff Creek, but they weren’t interested in lures. Places to look for salmon included Little Beach, Nanarup and Bornholm, which also has some big tailor. There are some nice skippy being taken east of town. King george whiting are worth chasing in the Sound and the two harbours, with herring responding well to berley. There are also some solid flathead in the Sound and squid are worth chasing.

Big schools of salmon have been regularly appearing at Poison Creek while Fourth Beach, Nine Mile, Ten Mile and Eleven Mile beaches all had schools turn up from time to time. Roses also had some decent size salmon schools show up together with tailor. Salmon and skippy have been the main species caught at Wyllie Bay, while at Kennedys it has been good for producing skippy to a solid 5kg.

Herring and squid can be sought from the Taylor Street and Tanker jetties with the former spot also producing a few King George whiting. Trolled bibbed minnows and skirted lures have been working well on the bluefin as well as hooking a few yellowtail kingfish. Queen snapper, nannygai and breaksea cod have been found near the islands.
